The Bartleby Character In Bartleby The Scrivener Story By Herman Melville

Melville has successfully played the role of Bartleby: The Scrivener Story. The character ‘prefers to’ go against the normal because it is his preference.

Bartleby recited the chorus “I would rather not to” as this was his subconscious. Bartleby felt it creep into his mind as he was sitting at the closed desk. It shone through a dark wall. Bartleby was a thin, pale man who is very reliable and professional at his job. Bartleby copied numerous documents meticulously and didn’t stop. Bartleby even grabbed a copy of the document and went about his business. Bartleby did not check the paper, but the lawyer asked Bartleby. It would be difficult for some people with sanguine temperaments to bear it. Bartleby was polite and calm, saying, “I would prefer to not.” This surprise surprised the lawyer as well as everyone else. However, everyone was affected by the polite rejection. Turkey informed the lawyer that he was willing to have a quart each day of good ale if he had the choice. The lawyer responded enthusiastically, ‘So you have the words too’. Bartleby began to lose motivation as his eyesight started to decline. Bartleby stopped doing anything except stare at the window outside. Bartleby may have lost motivation due to insufficient communication between employees and concerns. Bartleby’s workplace is quite telling. “I purchased a high-quality folding screen that would completely isolate Bartleby from me, but not take him out of my mind,” Bartleby said. Thus, privacy was combined with society. In this way, privacy and society were conjoined.” Bartleby was a former employee at the Dead Letter Office. He had been laid off by the government for his past actions. He became depressed and lost motivation. Bartleby develops a close relationship with his family. Bartleby’s diet consists of ginger nuts. Bartleby was grateful for this kind of help. Bartleby does not resist but refuses to do what he does not want. Bartleby won’t leave his office or the lawyer’s home to be confined in the tombs. He doesn’t want anything to change. Bartleby didn’t like the job at Dead Letter Office. The government’s changes forced him to leave. Bartleby is afraid of any change that might come. Bartleby faces inwards towards the high wall when he is in the tombs. It is like Bartleby looking out of the window at his office. Bartleby seems like he is always in depression. His eyes are still blurred, and he was freed from depression when he passed away.

As you can see, Bartleby is a complex and intricate person. Bartleby lives in a tight society. Bartleby’s life is filled with struggle and he would rather not have it.
