A Review Of The Film ‘Coraline’

“Coraline” tells the story of an 11-year-old girl who embarks on multiple adventures in an alternate universe. She must go through a small entrance to get into this world. Although rated PG, this film is suitable for both adults and children. The movie has a creepy atmosphere throughout. Coraline is dark imagery that has psychological depth. It makes one wonder if you should let your child watch the movie. Coraline is a scary movie that can scare children. It has dark themes and deep meanings.

The imagery of an “other father” that is being controlled by “the Other Mother”, basically makes him look like a puppet. Wybie, another character in the movie, is a key player. His mouth was made by the “other father” to hide her plans to coraline. This sounds very creepy to me. It would be nice to believe that this movie and all others are random. Everything, including animation, is created with intention and purpose. It is designed to have a visual or psychological purpose. It isn’t a bad film. The story is intriguing and keeps you awake at night. But, it’s not something I would recommend to children. This film also features a lot of language. Coraline’s film uses insulting words such ‘jerk Wad’ or ‘idiot, which is a typical part of her language. The way they behave speaks volumes about the characters. A non-reverent and non-prayerful invoke of deity is seen at least twice. As a youngster, I saw “Coraline” as a fairy tale about gratitude and not falling for the fanciful. But as I grew older, I began to see deeper meanings. This film is not recommended for children. Henry Selick was not targeting the right age group.
